ubuntulo1: well, i'm afraid im really not the one to help, i just solved a similar problem by typing "sudo apt-get update" and then clicking on "reload" so i'm quite sure it is some corrupted data on your machine

It's not technically our business, but we'd like to tell you that IRC'ing as root is a Very Bad Idea (tm). After all, doing anything as root when root is not needed is bad, and especially bad with software that connects to the Internet.
